大学入試の英文の出典 ― 東京大学の場合(2)

前回,東大の入試英文の出典を取り上げましたが,今回は出典原文と出題の間の異同がどうなっているかを調べてみます。

例として,2006年の5番の問題を扱います。前回触れたように,これはUmberto Eco (ウンベルト・エーコ)著の "How to Travel with a Salmon and other Essays" (1994) の中の How to React to Familiar Faces という章から採られています。ニューヨークでよく知った顔を見つけ,でも誰だったか思い出せず,声をかけようか逃げようか迷うというEco 自身の体験談からはじまり,それが実は知り合いでも何でもない,俳優のアンソニー・クインだと気づき,そこから話題はメディア論へと展開していく章で,原文ではペーパーバック 3ページに満たないはなしです。本文中に Eco ということばが出てきますので,出典探しは楽でした。

もともとはイタリア語で,翻訳はWilliam Weaver。わたしの持っている版と東大が使った版とが同じかどうかは不明なので,ここに挙げたものが正しいとは限りませんが,比べてみるとほぼすべて易しい英語への言い換えになっていることから考え,東大による改編だとみなせると思います。

問題によっては大幅な省略が行われることがありますが,この問題では省略箇所はありません。

なお,同じ年に同じ原文が筑波大学でも使われていて,当然ながら書き換え箇所は異なっています。出版年はだいぶ以前なのに,なぜよりによって同じ年に同じ文章を使ったのかは,わたしには謎です。

原文自体がかなり易しい英語なのですが,それをさらにやさしく書き換えています。東大を受けようという受験生なら知っているだろうと想定できるものでさえ書き換えているようです。うなずける語彙レベルの書き換えは,11, 13, 20, 25, 28といったあたりでしょうか。説明を加えたり,注の手間を省いた7や15も納得できます。

しいて東大の書き換え意図を推測すれば,できるだけ語彙でつまずくのを避けて,設問箇所に集中させようということなのかもしれません。文脈から設問部分を考えさせたい,よって前後の脈絡は苦労せずに読み取れるようにさせる,好意的にとればそんなところでしょう。

5は書き換えた句を選択肢にしていますが,これはどうかな。19では順序を変えて解きやすくするねらいでしょうか。

この中では12が比較的大きく変わっています。これは,下線部(6)が「"worse"とされていることは何か。25~35字の日本語で述べよ。」という設問になっているからと思われます。東大が挿入した一文(My problems with film stars were all in my head, of course.)が問題を解く上での手がかりになるわけです。

34では,独立節として使われている until 節をダッシュで前文につなげています。高校レベルの英文法としてはこういう独立節の用法は破格であることが理由でしょう。「時・条件の副詞節では未来のことを現在形で用いて表現する」というルールに照らして,willをカットしています。原文にwillが使われているのは,独立節であるため,副詞節的性質が弱まり,untilが等位接続詞として感じられるためだと思います。
