ここからが第2部の始まります。
第1部で事件の概要が説明されました。ホームズとワトソンはボヘミア国王の依頼で，国王のかつての愛人アイリーン・アドラーから，国王と彼女が写った写真を取り戻さなければなりません。アイリーンは周到で用心深く，国王の写真奪回の試みからことごとく逃れ，写真はいまだにどこにあるのかもわからない状態です。ホームズの探索が始まります。
語り手ワトソンは，「明日の3時に来てくれ」というホームズの指示どおり，ベーカー街のホームズの部屋へやって来るところから。

At three o’clock precisely I was at Baker Street, but Holmes had not yet returned. The landlady informed me that he had left the house shortly after eight o’clock in the morning. I sat down beside the fire, however, with the intention of awaiting him, however long he might be. I was already deeply interested in his inquiry, for, though it was surrounded by none of the grim and strange features which were associated with the two crimes which I have already recorded, still, the nature of the case and the exalted station of his client gave it a character of its own. Indeed, apart from the nature of the investigation which my friend had on hand, there was something in his masterly grasp of a situation, and his keen, incisive reasoning, which made it a pleasure to me to study his system of work, and to follow the quick, subtle methods by which he disentangled the most inextricable mysteries. So accustomed was I to his invariable success that the very possibility of his failing had ceased to enter into my head.
It was close upon four before the door opened, and a drunken-looking groom, ill-kempt and side-whiskered, with an inflamed face and disreputable clothes, walked into the room. Accustomed as I was to my friend’s amazing powers in the use of disguises, I had to look three times before I was certain that it was indeed he. With a nod he vanished into the bedroom, whence he emerged in five minutes tweed-suited and respectable, as of old. Putting his hands into his pockets, he stretched out his legs in front of the fire and laughed heartily for some minutes.
"Well, really!" he cried, and then he choked and laughed again until he was obliged to lie back, limp and helpless, in the chair.
"What is it?"
"It’s quite too funny. I am sure you could never guess how I employed my morning, or what I ended by doing."
"I can’t imagine. I suppose that you have been watching the habits, and perhaps the house, of Miss Irene Adler."
"Quite so; but the sequel was rather unusual. I will tell you, however. I left the house a little after eight o’clock this morning in the character of a groom out of work. There is a wonderful sympathy and freemasonry among horsy men. Be one of them, and you will know all that there is to know. I soon found Briony Lodge. It is a bijou villa, with a garden at the back, but built out in front right up to the road, two stories. Chubb lock to the door. Large sitting-room on the right side, well furnished, with long windows almost to the floor, and those preposterous English window fasteners which a child could open. Behind there was nothing remarkable, save that the passage window could be reached from the top of the coach-house. I walked round it and examined it closely from every point of view, but without noting anything else of interest.

「いやはや，まったく。」そう大声を出すと，喉を詰まらせ，もう一度吹き出して，いすの上でのけぞって，力なくぐったりとしてしまった。
「どうしたんだ。」
「あまりにも，おかしくてね。午前中，僕が何をしていたか，そのあげくどうなったか，まあ想像もできまい。」
「できないさ。アイリーン・アドラー嬢の習慣やら，それに家かな，そんなものを見張ってたんじゃないか。」

＝ 解説 ＝
- The landlady ― イギリス英語の landlady は，「下宿屋・パブ・旅館の女主人」。あとで，「ターナー夫人」という名でもう一度登場する。
- informed me that he had left the house ― inform O of ～, inform O that S + V の形で使い，「Oに～を知らせる」。
- shortly after ― この shortly 「すぐに」は，前(left)にかかっているのではなく，後ろの after にかかり，「～の直後に」という意味。soon after も同じ。
- with the intention of awaiting him ― with the intention of Ving 「Vする意図を持って，Vするつもりで」。
- however long he might be ― 直訳は，「彼がどんなに長くかかっても」。 however + 形・副 + S (may) + V 「どんなに～ようとも」。 このmight は，～ever の譲歩節で使われるが，あまり意味を持っていない。なくてもよい。
- for, though it was …. recorded, still, the nature of the case … gave it a character of its own. ― for は「というのは．．．だから」の等位接続詞。though ～ recorded までは挿入。still (それでも)の後ろの the nature と the exalted station が主語で gave が動詞。
- the grim and strange features which were associated with the two crimes which I have already recorded ― grim 「恐ろしい，気味が悪い」。feature 「特徴」。be associated with ～ 「～と関係している，～が連想される」。「私がすでに記録した2つの事件」とは，「緋色の研究」(A Study in Scarlet)と「4つの署名」(The Sign of Four)のこと。発表順で言えば，「ボヘミアの醜聞」はこの2つに続く3作め。
- the nature of the case ― nature 「性質・本質，種類」
- and the exalted station ― exalted 「身分の高い，誇大な，有頂天の」。 station 「場所，地位」。
- apart from the nature of the investigation ― apart from (= aside from) ～ 「～を別にすると」。
- which my friend had on hand ― ふつうは have ～ on one’s handsで「～を抱え込んでいる，担当している」。
- there was something in his masterly grasp of a situation, and his keen, incisive reasoning, which … ― つながりは， there was something in A which ～ 「Aの中には～な何かがあった」。つまり，which節はsomethingにかかる。in ～ reasoning は挿入。
- his masterly grasp of a situation, and his keen, incisive reasoning, which … ― masterly 「達人の，みごとな」。 grasp 「把握，理解」。 incisive 「切れの良い」 < incise 「切開する，切る」。
- which made it a pleasure to me to study …, and to follow ― which 以下は something にかかり， make it + C + to V の形式目的語構文「VすることをCにする」。ここでは不定詞が2つあり，「study することと，followすることを私にとっての歓びにさせてしまうような何か」ということになる。
部屋に入ってきたのは，だいぶ酒の回っていそうな馬丁で...
- the quick, subtle methods by which he disentangled the most inextricable mysteries. ― disentangle 「（もつれたものを）解きほぐす」 ↔ entangle 「もつれさせる」。 inextricable 「解決できない，ほどけない」 < extricate 「解放する，逃れさせる」。
- So accustomed was I to his invariable success that the very possibility of his failing had ceased to enter into my head. ― 全体は so ～ that 構文で，かつ倒置形（動詞がbeでso ～ thatの時，時々倒置が起こる）。普通の語順に並び替えると， I was so accustomed to his invariable success that … となる。be accustomed to ～ 「～に慣れている」。 invariable 「不変の」 < vary 「変わる」。cease to V 「Vしなくなる」。
- It was close upon four before the door opened ― close on[upon] ～ 「（時間，年齢，数値が）ほとんど～」(≒ almost)。この close は形容詞。発音は[kloʊs]。
- a drunken-looking groom, ill-kempt and side-whiskered, with an inflamed face and disreputable clothes, walked into the room. ― 主語が groom，動詞が walked，間は groom を説明する同格的な挿入句。 groom 「馬丁，馬の飼育係」。 ill-kempt = unkempt 「（髪が）とかしていない，ぼさぼさの」 < kempt 「（髪が）きちんと，とかしつけられた」。 side-whiskered 「ほおひげのはえた」。 inflamed 「赤くはれた，興奮した（怒った）」 < flame 「炎」。disreputable 「いかがわしい，みすぼらしい」 < reputable 「りっぱな」。
ひげは場所によって呼び名が異なる
- Accustomed as I was to my friend’s amazing powers in the use of disguises ― C + as + S + V 「・・・だけれども」(= though S+V+C)。SVC以外でも用いることがある。 disguise 「変装，仮装」
- With a nod he vanished ― nod 「うなずき」。 vanish 「消える」。
- whence he emerged in five minutes tweed-suited and respectable, as of old. ― whence 「そこから」。ここは関係副詞の非制限用法。 emerge 「現れる」。 in + 時間 「～したら，～後に」。 as of old 「昔みたいに」。
- Putting his hands into his pockets, ― 分詞構文。
- he stretched out his legs ― stretch out 「いっぱいに伸ばす」。
- laughed again until he was obliged to lie back, limp and helpless, in the chair. ― limp and helpless は挿入。 be obliged to V 「Vせざるをえない」。 limp 「だらんとした」(lacking strength or energy)。
- I am sure you could never guess how I employed my morning, or what I ended by doing. ― could not は「～はずがない」。 employ 「利用する，費やす」。 end by Ving は「Vすることによって終わる」→ 「最後にVする」。ここは，doing の目的語が what。
- Quite so ― 「そのとおり」。既出。
- but the sequel was rather unusual. ― sequel 「結果」。
- in the character of a groom out of work. ― in the character of ～ 「からの身分・地位・肩書きで」。 out of work 「失業した」(= unemployed) で，groom にかかる。
- There is a wonderful sympathy and freemasonry among horsy men. ― sympathy 「共感・同情」。 freemasonry 「友愛感情」。もちろん，よく秘密結社として扱われるフリーメイソン。freemason が個々の加盟員， freemasonry がその団体のことだが，個々では比喩的に sympathy と似たような意味での身内意識，連帯感のことを言っている。 horsy men は「馬を扱う職業に従事するものたち」くらいの意味。
- Be one of them, and you will know all that there is to know. ― 命令文, and … = if you ～, … だから，ここは If you are one of them, you will know … となる。 all that there is to know の that は関係代名詞で，直訳すると「知るべきすべての存在するもの」ということ。
- It is a bijou villa, with a garden at the back, but built out in front right up to the road, two stories. ― bijou [bíːʒuː] はもともとフランス語で「宝石」。英語ではその意味から「宝石のように小さくてきれいな」の意味の形容詞としても使われる。 villa 「別荘，邸宅，お屋敷」。 build out 「増築する，外に張り出して建てる」。 two stories のstorey は「階」（アメリカ英語の綴りでは story）。
- Chubb lock ― Chubb(チャブ)は，実在するイギリスの鍵メーカーのブランド名。現在もある。 Chubb lock は辞書によると，「こじあけようとするとボルトを動かないように固定する装置がついている錠」（リーダーズ）とある。写真は，現在のChubbブランドの一例。
- sitting-room ― living room 「居間」は，イギリス英語では sitting room とも言える。
- well furnished ― furnish 「（家具などを）備え付ける」。ここは過去分詞で sitting-room にかかる。
- those preposterous English window fasteners which a child could open. ― preposterous 「ばかばかしい，不合理な」( completely unreasonable, especially in a way that is shocking or annoying [OALD])。 fastener 「留め具」。 could は仮定法で，子どもでもやろうと思えば開けられる，ということ。
- Behind there was nothing remarkable ― 倒置。 Nothing remarkable was behind there. 「その背後には注目すべきものはなかった」。
- save that the passage window could be reached from the top of the coach-house ― save は前置詞で「～を除いて」(= except)。 except, but, save はどれも同じで，他の前置詞とはちがい that 節を目的語にできる。 reach 「手を伸ばす，～に手が届く」。 coach house 「馬車置き場」。
- from every point of view, ― from ～ point of view 「～の視点では」。
- but without noting anything else of interest. ― without 句は，文修飾的。「～に気づくことなく調べた」→「調べたが，気づかなかった」。 of interest = interesting が anything else にかかっている。
